Synopsis

The Kannada play Prameelaarjuneeyam (1896) adapts Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream by blending Indian myths and poetic styles. Set in Malayaala, it reimagines fairy characters as Manmatha-Rathidevi and transforms Athens to Indian soil. The story intertwines Arjuna-Prameela’s romance with young lovers’ defiance and forest chaos, featuring supernatural beings and amateur actors. Using Yakshagana music, modern theatre techniques, and vivid themes like love, jealousy, and illusion, the play creates an entertaining and experimental theatrical experience rooted in tradition and innovation.
